Tuning Our Words to Wisdom

Proverbs 2:2 (NLT)- “Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding.”

As we enter this year, another wisdom area of focus must be our words. Scripture teaches that our words are spirit and life (John 6:63), meaning what we speak carries spiritual weight and has a direct impact on the outcomes we experience. When we speak positively, we position ourselves to reap positive results; when we speak negatively, we often invite negative outcomes.

Therefore, our words must be seasoned with grace. This requires intentional refinement by choosing language that reflects wisdom, kindness, courtesy, truth, and the favor of God. Gracious speech is not merely about what we say, but how and when we say it. Our words should be uplifting, purposeful, and effective rather than harsh or blunt.

We are called to deliver truth with love and wisdom, regardless of the hopelessness of the person or situation involved. When our speech is guided by grace, it builds others up, fosters encouragement, and invites meaningful dialogue, drawing people in rather than pushing them away. This principle is beautifully affirmed in Colossians 4:6, which urges us to let our conversation be gracious and seasoned with salt.

Prayer Point:

Father, this year help me to speak in a way that reflects Christ. Let my words honor You every time I open my mouth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
