The Treasure of Parental Guidance
Proverbs 6:20-21 (NLT)- “My son, obey your father’s commands, and don’t neglect your mother’s instruction. Keep their words always in your heart. Tie them around your neck.”
The guidance that comes from honoring godly instruction, especially from parents or spiritual mentors is powerful beyond words can describe. Their instructions serve as a moral compass that helps us discern right from wrong. Keeping their words in our heart means we should internalize good values so they become part of our character and prevent us from impulsive decisions that often lead to regret.
Tying their words around your neck means being constantly aware of godly counsel. In moments of pressure, temptation, or confusion, these teachings bring to our remembrance who we are and what we stand for. Many wrong choices are made in fleeting moments where we ignore what we already know is right.
We must live intentionally so we don’t drift into making wrong decisions. We must have the truth stored up in us. By valuing our parents instruction and revisiting it regularly, our ability to choose wisely even when it’s difficult is strengthened. This discipline will build us a life marked by integrity, stability, and peace, sparing us from the consequences that often follow careless or uninformed choices.
Prayer Point:
Lord, help me to treasure and internalize wise instruction so that I choose what is right, even in moments of temptation in Jesus name. Amen.
