Understanding: A Virtue You Can’t Live Without
Proverbs 7:7–8 (KJV)- “And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, A young man void of understanding, Passing through the street near her corner; And he went the way to her house,”
There are some virtues we cannot live without as believers. Love is one virtue. Understanding is another important virtue that we cannot live without. Virtues are to the soul as the organs are to the body. We need it for whole proper functioning of the spirit man. From the passage, the young man “passed through the street near her corner,” showing that he willingly entertained what he should have avoided without realizing what he was getting himself into.
Understanding is one of the critical virtues of the soul we can’t live without because it gives us the necessary insight to avoid spiritual danger. This virtue may best be defined as “standing under.” It is the virtue that allows you to “stand under” life so as to better comprehend life. The young man became morally useless because lacked the knowledge of how people work and an appreciation for the laws of sowing and reaping.
Understanding is the virtue that allows you to see how people operate and to know why people act what they do. This virtue allows you to see how the laws of life work and grasp the principles of “cause and effect,” or the laws of sowing and reaping. The young man didn’t understand that sexual immorality would hurt his soul and a wrong woman could destroy his mind, soul and spirit. If he was armed with “understanding,” sound decisions would have followed.
