Wisdom and Peace
Proverbs 3:17–18 (NKJV)-“Her ways are ways of pleasantness, And all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, And happy are all who retain her.”
In this passage, the Bible describes wisdom as something life-giving, steady, and kind. God’s wisdom doesn’t promise a trouble-free life. Instead, it promises a better way to walk through life. When we follow it, our path is marked by peacebecause our hearts are grounded in God.
Calling wisdom a tree of life reminds us that wisdom nourishes us when we’re tired, strengthens us when we’re weak and grows slowly but steadily over time and lasts long. Except a tree is intentionally cut down it can live for hundreds of years. To “take hold” of wisdom means choosing God’s way especially when it’s uncomfortable or inconvenient because it always leads to the path of peace. “Happy are they who retain her” means not letting go when life challenges our faith.
True happiness, according to this verse, comes not from chasing pleasure, but from holding tightly to God’s wisdom day after day. It is consciously choosing peace over impulse. It is PAUSING before one decision or conversation to ask– “What would God’s wisdom look like here? Then choose that wisdom path even if it feels harder so that peace can have its way.
