Guarding Against Mockery
Proverbs 3:34 (NLT)- “The Lord mocks the mockers but is gracious to the humble.”
A mocker is someone who is proud, arrogant, and dismissive of correction. This person laughs at wisdom, rejects instruction, and treats God’s truth lightly. Instead of humbling themselves, they harden their heart. Mockery is often rooted in pride. It quietly says, “I know better.” When we refuse correction or look down on others, we place ourselves in a dangerous spiritual position.
Pride subtly convinces us that we already know enough, that we do not need guidance, or that we are somehow better than others. Yet Scripture makes it clear that God opposes pride because pride pushes Him away. A hardened heart resists growth and blocks spiritual maturity. It keeps us from becoming who God desires us to be.
God may allow consequences to teach us when we resist Him, but His desire is always restoration, not rejection. None of us is above mistakes, and none of us is perfect. The question is not whether we will fail, but how we respond when corrected. Are you defensive? Quick to judge? Slow to listen? Ask the Lord to reveal hidden pride and replace it with a humble, teachable spirit.
Prayer Point:
Father, search my heart and expose any pride within me. Keep me from mockery and spiritual arrogance. Give me a humble and teachable spirit that welcomes Your correction and grows through it. Amen.
